Basketball COVID Announcement
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thank you for your interest in basketball for the 2021-2022 season. We are excited about all the fun and school spirit that comes along with basketball games at King's! We believe that a vibrant athletics department is vital to the overall enjoyment of being at King's, and we're committed to keeping sports alive and thriving!
As you may know, COVID numbers are increasing in our area, and we have to consider the safety of our students and staff as one of our top priorities. We have learned since last year that players wearing masks for practices and games is both ineffective and dangerous. We are committing to players not wearing masks this season. However, to reduce the risk of COVID transmission, King's will require that all basketball players and coaches agree to be tested for COVID at a minimum of once per week. We will administer the tests here at King's, using the over-the-counter rapid test with results in about 15 minutes. (Our goal is to test no more than twice per week, but that will depend on the availability and cost of tests.) Players will need to agree to testing in order to play. The test results will remain confidential and stay on file here at King's. Positive results will get reported to the county, but students can go for a PCR test if they believe the rapid was a false positive, and the PCR results will override the rapid.
At the moment, King's is purchasing all of the COVID tests for players. Tests cost between $15-$25 for a pack of two, depending on the store. We have applied for permission to have the state supply all our tests for us, for free, but the application could take 4-8 weeks to be approved. This delay will result in thousands of dollars being spent by King's on tests - which is not an expense in our budget. As a result, we are asking families of basketball players to consider purchasing 4 weeks' worth of tests (2 packs of 2 tests each) and sending them into the nurse's office to help defray these costs. We are also looking for donations from families of students who don't play basketball. You can purchase tests and send them in, or send in $50 to cover 1 month of tests for 1 player.
If you have any questions about testing, the basketball season, or anything else, please don't hesitate to contact us.
