Mrs. Terry: Class Notes
In April/May we will be learning:
Phonics/Reading- We will be reading readers, I Can Read Well, Books 2 and 3. Our new sight words for this month are: or, are, they, good, she,little, that. We continue to work on reading special sounds, short and long voweled words, and in increase in our reading fluency. Please continue to practice reading at home with your child.
Writing/Handwriting- We will be learning about the Word Choice writing trait. This is the last writing trait we will be covering this year. The children will begin writing and illustrating their own stories modeled after Laura Numeroff’s stories which children love. Parents will be invited into our classroom for a special Author’s Day. I will send a note as the day gets closer. The children will read their stories for our classroom visitors. We will also be practicing numbers and letters the children still struggle with writing correctly.
Math- comparing objects by weight, identifying doubles,covering with tangrams, matching equivalent sets,copying geoboard designs, sorting objects by shape and size, acting out addition and subtraction stories, dividing shapes in half by cutting, placing a tag on a pictograph, review telling time to the hour, review counting pennies, nickels and dimes
Bible- Jesus Lives Again, The House on the Rock, Jesus Begins His Church
Social Studies- We will be learning about the state of Alaska for this year’s Cultural Fair. I have chosen to teach the children in class rather than have them do this project at home. We will be learning about Alaska’s, location, landforms, first inhabitors, food, traditions,state symbols and natural resources. The children will be engaged in many hands on activities. We will be making salt dough maps, painting, constructing landscapes, making a class totem pole and cooking. I will be asking each student to bring in $2.00 to cover the cost of materials I will have to purchase. Thank you.
Science- We will be learning about plants, seeds and germination. We will also be experimenting with magnets.
