Mrs. Taylor: Class Notes
Hello parents and students!
Welcome to a new year at the
Kings School!
I am looking forward to another exciting and rewarding year with new and returning students!
Our motto here at King’s, "Preparing Tomorrows Leaders Today", is taken seriously. I really want to make sure all students in 7th and 8th grades are ready for high school. We focus on having Godly character in the classroom as well as during free time, in study halls and during their lunch period. We know this is one of the main ingredients to a successful year.
Another attribute I work on with the students is organization. This is another foundational tool for success in my classes and beyond.
I do locker checks and binder checks which they receive a grade for organization.
Class schedule:
English: We cover various areas of learning in the english curriculum.
Vocabulary: I introduce 10 new words per week. This will be on Monday. Their homework will be to write their word on an index card and the meaning in a sentence on the back with the part of speech. Every Friday they have a vocabulary test. They need to be able to spell the word, know its meaning and part of speech.
Grammar: We will be using the English Workshop book. The exercizes will be completed in their books usually during class.
Writing: Every Monday I will put a new word on the word board. The students will put on the board what comes to their mind when they see the word and be responsible to write a story using the words on the board. We will also have other writing assignments throughout the year.
Reading: We will be reading individual books as well as literature in our Themes in Literature books. We will be reading approximately six books this year. The first book is . We will start the first full week of school. We have reading sheets that go along with each book. They will read 2 to 4 chapters per week{depending on the size of the chapter} We will have tests or quizzes periodically.
History: We are using, Prentice Hall, The American Nation book for history. This book is divided in half for 7th and 8th grades. The first half chapters 1 thru 17 is covered in 7th and the second half 18 through 30 in 8th grade. This year we will be doing chapters 1 thru 17. We have to move through the material quickly, we have a lot to cover. After each section there are section review’s. These are almost always given for homework . They can count on a quiz following the section review. A test will be given at the end of the chapter.
Science: We are using CSI Science curriculum. The book is Physical Science. They will be working on a science portfolio to go along with their other activities. This will consist of their lab work and other creative imput throughout the year. In this book they also have section reviews. These are also usually done for homework. They do not usually have many quizzes but they do have tests at the end of each chapter.
This year I also have plenty of opportunity for them to do extra credit work to bring any low grades up. Each sheet they do that is 100% correct will give them an added 10 points. This is for all of my classes. This is up to the student to take the initiative to get a sheet and complete it and turn it in on time.
I am very excited about this year! You’re kids are great! I love them already!
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me.
