Miss Staples: Class Notes
Welcome to the Second Grade!!!!!!
Helpful Info About Routines & Homework:
Homework assignments will be written in your child’s planner each night. Please look at this planner nightly and sign it. If you have notes for me you can write them in the planner. If you have a note for the office, please use a separate paper and put it in your child’s homework folder.
Your child will have a composition notebook in their backpack each night. This notebook will contain their weekly spelling words and their memory verse. Please review these nightly. Spelling and verse work will not be written in the assignment book every night because they are an ongoing assignment. Spelling and verse tests are every Friday. We will have spelling pretests on Thursdays.
Bible: We will be studying the promises of God. Specifically we are focusing on the life of Moses and the Isrealites throughout the year. Many other Biblical concepts will be tied in to this broader theme. During the next few weeks, we will be studying how God can work all things together for good and how we can hear his voice.
Memory Verse: 1Peter 1:15 Tested 12/11
Review Lesson 7-11: Tested 12/11
Reading: Our story this week is Pearl and Wagner. This is a fantasy. We will focus on,sequencing and will review identifying realism vs. fantasy and author’s purpose. This story ties in with our current unit on creativity.
Reading Logs: Please encourage you child to use proper punctuation and capitalization. Also use prompts and give details for each statement made. This is a challenge for some, but these small exercises are vital to your child’s growth as a writer.
Math: We continue introduce new facts each week. We are learning the sums of 12 this week. The concepts being reviewed are measuring using inches, telling time to the half hour,as well as, using bargraphs, identifying fractional parts, and counting money using nickels.
Social Studies: We are starting a new unit on basic economics this week. We will be exploring the differences between goods and services. We will discuss budgeting and we’ll be deciphering between needs and wants. We will also have fun designing our own mock businesses after the Christmas break. More details to come!
Science: We have completed our Science Unit on Investigating Bones and Muscles. The children did a wonderful job!
Note: I teach our Social Studies and Science units in a rotating fashion. I find that concerntrating on each subject individually for a two or three week period is most effective in bringing continuity and depth to our investigations.
